Living the impossible

Knitting a quilt? It sort of sums up my life.

Let me start somewhere in the middle. My best girl friend from college lives three hours away and we stay in touch with visits, calls and now facebook. One of our favorite past times is to make fun of (I know very superficial and catty but, oh, so much fun) of our mutual friends and sorority sisters from college. Shauna and I have gone through our ups and downs which include divorce (mine), drug addiction (not us), unplanned pregnancy (me), marital infidelity(both), an autistic child (her), multiple sclerosis (me), a stint at a mental hospital (her), and more. To say we live in reality is an understatement. We have come to the realization that the truth is our friend….regardless of how ugly or uncomfortable it may be.

Getting back to Facebook. We have friends who REGULARLY post how wonderful their lives are (boast posts) which include but are not limited to:

1. My daughter just got straight A’s AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. My husband just bought me front row tickets to the fourth concert this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. We just paid off our student loans 12 years early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. My son just made the lead in his youth theater group!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To say we are over it is an understatement. No one’s life is that perfect.

So in her typical snarky fashion, Shauna made her status update to say:

“Just wanted to let you both know that I am sitting in front of glowing lights of the tree with my beautiful daughters knitting a quilt for the homeless and basking in the happiness of the good life… “

Now what is so funny about this is it is IMPOSSIBLE to knit a quilt just like it is impossible to have such a perfect life. I am not sure Shauna realized that because she has neither knitted nor quilted anything in her entire life. I don’t expect her to do either of those in her lifetime.

What has stuck with me since that FB post, I, and probably many of you, have been knitting quilts. Our quilts are awkward and maybe not the prettiest, or most uniform but we are knitting away. We are doing the impossible.

Since this is my first blog, I am not sure if anyone will read it or even like it…but I am hoping to become a better writer which will allow me to keep knitting my quilt and maybe I will even make some of my own boast posts along the way.
